U.S. COAST GUARD PHOTOGRAPH: "COLORS" Sound as the Colors Rise Over Aka Shima

Coast Guardsmen and troops salute the American Flag as it spreads to the breezes on Aka Shima, an island deep in Japan's inner defenses. The flag went up in the Keramas, close by Okinawa, six days before the major assault against that stronghold in the Ryukyus. The feeblest Japanese resistance with only scattered fire met the mighty American stab only 325 miles from the Japanese homeland. No date
